RiverFest: A Brilliant Concept

There are three more chances to see works by THE RIVER PROJECT (listed at the end of this post) one of which was RiverFest which I attended this past Saturday, May 10th.

RiverFest was designed to increase awareness of issues involving the Thames, including how the natural world serves as inspiration for artists and writers, and was organized by a group of nineteen London artists and poets who have been "creatively exploring the Thames River within the boundaries of the city."

To this end they had a book launch on May 1st in which they introduced a beautiful "coffee table" style softcover as a collaborative effort.

I bought my copy of the river project: 19 London artists turn to the Thames on May 2nd when I attended an event at the central library featuring Cornelia Hoogland, Kane Foucher, Penn Kemp and Sheila Martindale, and I'm so glad I have one of these limited-edition works-of-art. (About 2000 were printed; preview the book here.)

It seems to me that we in the London Writers' Society may want to take a look at what they have done and see if there is a project that we would like to undertake in the future that would add to the appreciation of our city and people.

But back to RiverFest. This was Saturday's itinerary:

The film on the Flood of 1937 was amazing. Chris Doty made that film and I was struck - again - with what a loss London suffered as a result of his death.

All the films listed above are in the LPL's film collection and can be viewed in library. If you have any interest in London history, you will enjoy them.
